Yay!
Stu from the Observer came to visit last Friday and wanted to know about our "Family Fun Fridays". He wrote up a nice article about what we are doing and put in a few of our pictures! I encourage you to check it out. :)

Friday is our Gingerbread party!
I know this is such short notice but I am curious if there is anyone who would be interested in making a dozen or two gingerbread cookies for our celebration on Friday? They would need to be shaped like gingerbread men (or women). This week we will enjoying reading books about all things gingerbread related and ending the week decorating cookies! I would like to have at least one per child but it would be great if they could decorate two and take one home.
If you could help out, please let me know by email or a note tomorrow. I will be sending home additional information home tomorrow but wanted to see if I could get any interest this way!
Thank you in advance!

Thumbs up for cutting :)
Hello Everyone!
We are starting to work on our cutting skills and I wanted to share a few things that we are focusing on.
1. Walking safely with scissors. This is how we hold our scissors when we are walking with them.
2. Thumbs up for cutting! I have shared that our thumb goes in the smaller circle and the next three fingers go in the larger hole. We need to make sure that their thumb is on the top so they could make a thumbs up if they wanted to! Often times children want to flip their hand to put their thumb on bottom and it makes it very difficult for them. Lastly, their other hand helps with cutting by holding the paper.
Having them focus on cutting something as simple as straight lines that you have drawn on a piece of construction paper. Often times children find it difficult because they are still working on strengthening the muscles need to cut and that is OK. Cut a few lines and take a break. :)
Please let me know if you have any questions! I would love to help!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NOVEMBER :)
It's been a few weeks! Sorry!
DATES TO REMEMBER:
Thanksgiving Break- November 23rd-25th
Parent Teacher Conferences- November 28th, 29th and December 1st
End of Unit Celebration- December 9th
Winter Break December 19th-30th
COLDER WEATHER
Most children have been coming more then prepared for the weather (that seems to change day to day!) but if you are able to send in an extra set of hats and mittens clearly labeled that would be very helpful. I will put it in with their extra clothing just in case. :)
TEXT ALERTS
I have the option of sending a text message to your phone as another form of communication. If this sounds like something you would be interested in (or would work better then email and calls) please let me know! I would love to have a simple way to send information to a whole class at a time. If I find that there is a lot of interest I will be sending home a form for you to sign. Thank you!
END OF UNIT CELEBRATION
We had a great time when parents came in for our second end of unit celebration! It gave your child a chance to see what they are doing each day and how we move about the classroom. Thank you to all that were able to attend. Our third end of unit celebration is scheduled for DEC 9!

Targets in the Classroom
Hello,
Each classroom has "targets" for learning. It essentially is the focus for the classroom at that time. It can be an academic or social goal. This is by no means the ONLY focus but it would be a few I really want to highlight. Targets could be a goal that is for the whole year, a month, a week or even a day! As we begin our year our main targets are often on the basic rules of the classroom such as * using walking feet in the classroom or *taking turns speaking at the rug. If you are able to use this same language at home it will help greatly at school. "Targets" can be a bit of a foreign term but when they are hearing it everywhere it helps. :) They will continue to have targets all the way through their 8th grade year.
At this point in the year I have changed our target board to three new ideas and I wanted to share them with you!
Target 1: Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough.
Target 2: We will learn about the letter _____. (It changes each day as the letter changes)
Target 3: Wash your hands
I taught a mini lesson on washing hands and will be tracking hand washing informally to see if it improves from the beginning of the year. I am in hopes that they are able to do so without a prompt each time by the end of February! WISH ME LUCK! ;)

Fire Safety
On Tuesday we had a visit from our local fire department. I wanted to highlight the most important points that were shared with your students as pieces to remember!
* 911 is our emergency number and we only use for an emergency
* Please show your child where your smoke detectors are and have them check the battery with you! The children will be looking for a working smoke detector with a battery :)
* Please do not hide when there is a fire! Get near your closest window if you can not get out and yell loudly so you can be heard.
A point was brought up about children beginning to learn their address in case of emergency. Starting with parents real name (not mom and dad) and their street name is a great start! Often times they mentioned that if children need to call they are not sure where they live and what their adult families names are.
If you do not have a smoke detector in your house please contact the fire department and they will provide one. You can also let me know and I will get it to you!

FYI
Hello!
I talked with ALL students today but I wanted to let you know that I am NOT here tomorrow. I have a great substitute coming in and she is going to give me a nice run down of how the day goes.
I just wanted to remind you that students in the PM class will not have school on Friday, October 7th. And there is NO school on Monday, October 10th. It is Columbus Day.
